I also removed my SD cards in the same manner in case that was also slowing the machine while running Adobe software. I have a LaCie 5TB USB drive attached which I've removed from Spotlight in case that was slowing the machine. I understand one is a HDD and the other an SSD but the differences in speed, frequency of beachballing, and overall performance are astounding and frustrating. Regardless, neither of these uses should approach the limits of this processor or disk so I'm at a loss as to why everything is slow nearly all the time. The iMac is overall a very slow computer whether I use it for Mail, Safari, Pages, and Messages, or run more intense programs such as Lightroom and Photoshop.

My 2016 MBP runs circles around this machine in every respect. I don't use this machine too heavily because it's effectively incapable of being my daily driver.
